So, what is rye meal?
Rye meal is a coarsely ground flour made from whole rye grains, which come from the cereal grass Secale cereale. It is produced by cleaning, conditioning, and milling whole rye kernels, retaining the bran, germ, and endosperm. Unlike finely sifted white rye flour, rye meal has a heavier, grainy texture similar to cornmeal. It is commonly listed as an ingredient in dense baked goods such as pumpernickel bread, rye crispbreads, dark artisan breads, crackers, and hot porridge cereals.
Rye meal is vegan because it is derived entirely from a plant source. The manufacturing process relies on purely mechanical grinding and sifting of whole grains, requiring no animal products or animal-derived processing aids. Because the ingredient consists solely of milled rye berries, it contains no animal substances and is completely suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
