So, what is hexanal?

Hexanal, also known as hexanaldehyde, is an organic compound belonging to the aldehyde family that is used primarily as a flavoring agent and fragrance ingredient. It occurs naturally in a wide variety of plants, fruits, and vegetables, imparting a characteristic fresh, green, or grassy aroma. In commercial manufacturing, hexanal is either isolated from plant-based oils through the oxidation of linoleic acid or produced synthetically through chemical processes using petrochemical precursors such as 1-pentene.

Food manufacturers add hexanal to items such as fruit-flavored beverages, baked goods, hard candies, chewing gum, and frozen desserts to enhance crisp, fruity, or vegetal flavor profiles. It is also used in cosmetics, soaps, and household cleaning products for its scent.

Hexanal is vegan because its production relies entirely on botanical sources or synthetic chemical manufacturing. Animal-derived raw materials and animal byproducts are not used in its synthesis or refinement, making the ingredient suitable for a vegan diet.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like hexanal?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
