Manganese violet is a synthetic inorganic pigment chemically identified as ammonium manganese pyrophosphate, designated in industry as CI 77742. It is manufactured by reacting manganese dioxide or other manganese salts with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and phosphoric acid, which are then heated to create an insoluble, stable purple powder. The raw materials used in this synthesis originate entirely from minerals and industrial chemicals.
This ingredient is most commonly listed on labels for cosmetics and personal care items, such as eyeshadows, blushes, lipsticks, and nail lacquers. It is also utilized in certain pharmaceutical tablet coatings and select food contact applications where an inorganic violet colorant is required.
Manganese violet is vegan because it is composed entirely of synthetic mineral compounds. Animal-derived materials, animal tissues, and animal byproducts are not used as raw inputs or processing aids at any stage of its manufacture.
